Whenever the Mumbai underworld of the 90s is discussed, names like Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Arun Gawli, Ashwin Naik and Abu Salem are definitely taken, but apart from these,
there were many criminals who shook the city with their terror and whose lives took dramatic turns. One of these names was Firoz Konkani. This notorious gangster of D-Company not only killed a big BJP leader, but also played an important role in inciting riots in Mumbai again in 1993. Firoz Konkani’s real name was Firoz Abdullah Sarguru. He lived in a Muslim-dominated area near Dongri in South Mumbai. Since his family came from Ratnagiri in Konkan, he came to be known as ‘Konkani’. At the age of 16, when most children were struggling to pass school exams and get admission to college for further studies, Firoz entered the world of crime. He fell madly in love with a girl studying in Maharashtra College, Mumbai Central, but the girl loved someone else. In anger, Firoz stabbed the boy and killed him. A few days later, Mumbai Police arrested him and sent him to Arthur Road Jail.
Journey from Jail to Underworld
Jail is the biggest recruitment centre for the underworld. It was here that Firoz met the people of D-Company. He was fearless and angry, he used to fight even with big criminals in jail. D-Company shooters saw this nature of his and included him in their gang. Soon he was released after getting bail.
