Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently took to social media to reveal that she is truly impressed by Dev Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man . Praising the British actor-director on her Instagram stories, PeeCee wrote, “Bravo #DevPatel (applause emoji).
What an impressive debut!” Along with the caption, the actress shared a short clip from the film.
Actress Sobhita Dhulipala, who plays the role of Sita in Monkey Man, replied to Priyanka on her Instagram stories. She wrote, “Thank you @priyankachopra (red heart emojis). Monkey Man out in theatres worldwide, go watch.”
On March 11, the revenge action drama premiered at South by Southwest Festival (SXSW). It hit theatres worldwide on 5 April and is reportedly scheduled to come out in India on 19 April.
Set in India, the film follows a man on a revenge spree against the corrupt officials of a right-wing political party. “A rookie fighter with a monkey mask sets out to avenge the death of his mother at the hands of corrupt leaders,” the film’s synopsis read.
The Universal Pictures film also stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash Tripathy, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Makarand Deshpande, Jatin Malik and Zakir Hussain.
The film has received positive reviews from critics and audience alike. On X, formerly Twitter, a cinephile wrote, “Dev Patel deserves all the flowers, what a fantastic directorial debut.” Another X user posted, “Dev Patel, you little dancer! #MonkeyMan is full of gritty fight scenes, a chaotic blend of culturally significant story and revenge narrative, and stylish visuals. For a $10m budget, Dev has absolutely cooked with the vibrancy and passion on display here. That mouth knife kill (drool emoji).”
A third post read, “Dev Patel co-wrote his way out of stereotypical Hollywood hell and cast himself as the next great brown action star. Monkey Man sometimes tries to do too much at once, but I appreciate that it forced me to look up some of the cultural context.”
